Calibre MD sets sights on growth
2 July 2009
Source: WA Business News, 2 July 2009, article by John Phaceas
GOOD help, so the saying goes, is hard to find.
But Perth engineering group Calibre Global has bucked the odds to do just that, taking on high-profile mining chief Rod Baxter to capitalise on the opportunities thrown up by the global meltdown.
To some, the affable Aussie with a South African accent mining boss is a surprise choice as managing director of an engineering group.
As chief executive of Western Australian manganese and nickel miner Consolidated Minerals, Mr Baxter made his name locally by rebuilding the company's business reputation in 2007; a turnaround which culminated in a spectacular $1.1 billion cash takeover by Ukrainian billionaire Gennadiy Bogolyubov.
When Mr Baxter left ConsMin in early 2008, most observers expected him to quickly resurface at the helm of another listed miner keen to emulate ConsMin's performance.
Instead Mr Baxter says he spent the first few months "relaxing and getting to know the family again". That was followed by low-key return to public company life in January as a non-executive director of emerging Mid West iron ore miner and infrastructure group Murchison Metals, a role he remains strongly committed to.
However, Mr Baxter says his appointment to Calibre really shouldn't surprise anyone, not least because of Calibre's record as a "value engineer" and deliverer of major resources projects, especially in the bulk commodities sector that has dominated his career. Similarly, Calibre fits the bill perfectly for someone whose self-professed passion is for building and growing businesses for the benefit of their shareholders.
"Calibre is an entrepreneurial company that has grown remarkably fast in the last seven years and is ready for that next phase of evolution," Mr Baxter said.
"I looked at that, and then looked at the things I really enjoy, which is taking businesses, building them, growing them, modifying them and adding value for the shareholders, and this is just a great opportunity to do that."
Since it was formed in 2002, Calibre has completed or is completing resources and infrastructure projects worth $17 billion, including 11 major iron ore projects in the Pilbara, and 85 per cent of all Pilbara rail development since 2005.
Despite the downturn, the 2008-09 financial year has been a record (though the actual figures remain top secret) and Calibre expects to maintain its record of doubling revenue every two years.
Mr Baxter said Calibre's strength put it in a prime position to capitalise on the inevitable opportunities created as the resources and infrastructure markets rebounded.
"All the planets are aligned here," he said. "We've come through the global financial crisis; there will be a recovery, there's no doubt about it and I can see an opportunity to corporatise this business ... into something that will excite the market potentially in the future."
Mr Baxter's strategy is three pronged: optimise the existing business; capitalise on organic growth options within those businesses; and finally, pursue non-organic growth opportunities.
"We are exploring a number of opportunities including alliances and joint ventures, and at the same time, I'm also looking at strategic investors and acquisitions, focusing ultimately towards something where we could have a public face," he said.
That means a public listing, either directly or via the back-door, is likely down the track, though Mr Baxter stresses his approach will be careful and not dictated by any artificial timetable.
"I want to make sure I've got a really good solid story to bring to the market when I'm ready," he said.
More immediately, Mr Baxter said Calibre would focus on expanding its reach into allied industries, such as the east coast coal and civil infrastructure sectors.
For Calibre founder and executive chairman Ray Munro, Mr Baxter's appointment is a critical step on Calibre successfully moving to the next level.
"It's no secret that we are interested in increasing the size of Calibre Global and Rod's appointment will help us achieve that," Mr Munro said.
Mr Munro will remain executive chairman, while co-founder David Walker will also remain "closely engaged in the business". The two men jointly own more than 90 per cent of the company, in which Mr Baxter has also purchased a small equity stake as a sign of his commitment to the group.

Calibre goes back-to-back in global MERIT competition
2 May 2009
The international MERIT competition is a computer simulation that provides the essentials for construction professionals to augment their technical knowledge with the managerial skills required to run a modern construction company.
MERIT is an acronym for Management, Enterprise, Risk, Innovation and Teamwork.Participants learn how to manage their own fictional company by making decisions that affect the key functions of the business, such as marketing, tendering, finance, overheads, personnel and construction, and all in a 'safe', but realistic and competitive environment. After putting in a massive effort every week, our team “Calibrate and Conquer” went into the finals holding the lead. It came down to a nail biting finish and they just missed out on first place by 40 points in the very last round.
Last year, Calibre’s team of “Stop, Calibrate and Listen” took line honours.
Congratulations to this year’s Calibre MERIT team of Benjamin Ng (team captain), Stuart Lim, Russell Porter, Maykel Gedeon, Jonathan Chiew and Luke Epstein on an outstanding performance.
Calibre Engenium playing an integral part in Oakajee Port and Rail Project
20 March 2009
Calibre Engenium’s reputation as a leading rail EPCM continues to grow with a Bankable Feasibility Study commencing shortly on the railway aspects of the Oakajee Port and Rail (OPR) Project, a $4billion project which is certain to change the face of the Mid West region of WA.
Based on a new port at Oakajee, 25 km north of Geraldton, OPR is set to deliver a rail and port business to transport iron ore from mines in Western Australia’s Mid West region to customers across the globe. Calibre Engenium was originally engaged to conduct a Feasibility Study on a railway from Oakajee Port to the Jack Hills mine site (approx 500km), plus a spur to a mine at Weld Range. Over the last two years, the railway has transformed into a long term strategic network to serve a number of mines. Calibre Engenium has worked with these changing demands to initially investigate broad alignment concepts. Calibre Engenium has then developed the preferred concept into efficient routes, primarily serving mines in the north east of the Mid West region, plus potential connections to mines south of Mullewa.
In addition, Calibre Engenium has also been working on ‘Value Engineering’ studies, to optimise the key design parameters for the rail project and to reduce its capital and operating costs. The Value Engineering is a component of the Planning Phase that is due to be completed in May 2009. This will consolidate the scope for OPR’s impending Bankable Feasibility Study, which is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2010.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this on-going work. The Premier of Western Australia has stated that development at Oakajee is the single most important project for WA’s economic development over the next 50 years, and Calibre Engenium is proud to be a part of it.

Calibre teams take lead in Global MERIT competition
12 March 2008
MERIT is an acronym for Management, Enterprise, Risk, Innovation and Teamwork.
It is a computer simulation where participants from around the world learn how to manage their own fictional construction company by making decisions that affect the key functions of the business, such as marketing, tendering, finance, overheads, personnel and construction, and all in a 'safe' but realistic and competitive environment.
This year Calibre has three teams in the competition and with only a few weeks to go they're leading the pack.
In 1st position with 2,959 points is X-Calibre led by Vinzi Carcione, up 9% from last week.
In 2nd position and 10 points closer to the lead with 2,930 points is Stop, Calibrate and Listen led by Patrick Scanlon, also up 9% from last week.
Climbing rapidly and now in 13th position with 2,663 points is Soks And Jocks led by Sok Hong Teow, up 13% from last week.
Our teams have an overall average of 2,851 leading the nearest corporate rivals with 2,681 points.

Calibre Engenium cracks the "150+" mark and counting...
2 January 2008
Calibre Engenium reached another significant milestone recently, with a workforce now numbering in excess of 150 people, along with an order book of more than $5 billion of capital projects in various stages of development.
Formed as a joint venture between Calibre Rail and Engenium in 2005, the company has had a significant hand in designing and delivering most major rail infrastructure projects in the Pilbara, since its inception.
"To date we have designed and laid more track throughout the Pilbara in recent years than any other engineering firm, and we're helping our clients to get their commodities from pit to port in the most efficient manner possible", said Greg O'Rourke, Managing Director.
Calibre Engenium manages rail infrastructure projects through various stages of development, from initial feasibility and definitive engineering studies, through to detailed design, documentation, construction management, commissioning and handover.
Prior to the formation of Calibre Engenium, personnel now involved in key roles within the company were involved in Brockman 2 Railway for Rio Tinto (42kms), Marandoo Railway (50kms), Yandi Railway (150kms), West Angelas Railway (70kms), Gull to Tunkawanna Rail Duplication, Mining Area C Railway (42kms), and Rapid Growth Project Railway Stage 2 (50kms). Since inception Calibre Engenium has delivered the Tunkawanna to Rosella Rail Duplication (95km) and Lang Hancock Railway (58km), Yandi 36 Sidings and Yandi JSE Sidings and Loop Duplication for Rio Tinto. It is currently involved in the delivery of the Mesa A Railway and Brockman 4 Railways for Rio Tinto, the Pilbara 320 Railway Study for Rio Tinto, the Jack Hills Railway Study for Crosslands Resources and the RGP5 Rail Project for BHP Billiton.
Calibre Engenium continues to work on some of Australia's most significant rail infrastructure projects.
"We have recently secured the rail feasibility study for BHP Billiton Iron Ore's Rapid Growth Project 5, which is anticipated to require significant rail duplication for their Pilbara rail network. This study along with our recent award of the Rio Tinto 320 Rail Project, effectively sees Calibre Engenium being a key contributor in the development of the entire Pilbara Rail network and at the forefront of some of the largest rail projects being undertaken in Australia", said Mr O'Rourke.
"Pivotal to the company's success, has been the formation of a highly skilled team of rail specialists, along with a dedication to delivering projects safely, on time and on budget", he added.
